Veteran's Licensure & Application (Military Service)

Veteran's and the Home Base Iowa Act

In response to the Home Base Iowa Act, the Iowa Board of Nursing has adopted Iowa Administrative Code (IAC) rule, Chapter 18, Military Service and Veteran Reciprocity.  Pursuant to IAC 655 - 18.2, a military service applicant may apply for credit for verified military education, training or service toward any experience or educational requirement for licensure by submitting a military service application form to the board office.

"While the courses offered in military programs are comprehensive and rigorous, a veteran who has been a health care specialist (medic), corpsman or airman must learn the role of the nurse, the nursing process and the science of nursing care. The veteran must learn the role of the LPN/VN, the scope of practice and the principles of delegation to practice competently and safely. This is acquired through formal education, both clinical and didactic, and must be integrated throughout the course of study" (Adapted from "Military Programs," retrieved from pr.mo.gov/nursing under Military Connect).

  • The Army LPN Program is a standard LPN/VN program accepted by the IBON.
  • The Air Force BMTCP 4N051 (5 Skill Level) is comparable to a standard LPN/VN program and accepted by the IBON.

Call the board office at 515.326.4400 or email kendra.lindloff@iowa.gov to request an application.

Please follow the military service application instructions provided in the link below:

No fee is required with submission of an application for military service credit.
